Diabetic Foot Health

People with diabetes are 20 times more likely to suffer from serious foot problems. We focus on prevention through education and ongoing care.

While our focus is on prevention, if problems do occur we are highly adept and uniquely qualified to treat serious complications from diabetes.

This includes specialized care for skin ulcers and peripheral neuropathy, ensuring that minor issues don't become life-altering complications.

We are well equipped at Lala’s Footfix to manage the complex, high-risk foot medical problems associated with diabetes.

Ingrown Toenails

Assessment and treatment for onychocryptosis, where the nail grows sideways into the toe, causing pain and risk of infection.

Diagnosis: Made on the basis of the appearance of the toe and a history to determine the cause, such as improper trimming or incorrect footwear.

Treatment: Separation of the nail edge with padding, or surgical removal of a portion of the nail with a procedure to prevent regrowth.

Without Treatment: The nail may continue to grow into the side of the toe, leading to progressive pain, recurring infection, and serious risks for those with diabetes.

Athlete’s Foot

Diagnosis and treatment for fungal infections (tinea pedis) that cause itching, burning, or scaling, especially between the toes.

Diagnosis: Physical examination and potentially a skin scraping to identify the fungus under a microscope or through culture.

Treatment: Anti-fungal creams or ointments applied for 2 to 4 weeks. Prescription or over-the-counter medications are used depending on severity.

Without Treatment: While uncommon, untreated athlete’s foot can lead to cellulitis, a more serious bacterial skin infection that can spread.

Bunions

Care for enlarged, sore, and swollen joints at the base of the big toe, which can lead to deformity and chronic pain if ignored.

Diagnosis: Usually diagnosed during a physical exam, with X-rays used to investigate the joint angle and concerns like arthritis or gout.

Treatment: Comfortable shoes with a wide toe-box, resting, anti-inflammatory medications, or surgery in severe cases to realign the toe.

Without Treatment: Ignoring a bunion can lead to bursitis, increased pain, and permanent foot deformity.

Calluses and Corns

Treatment for thickened skin caused by repeated pressure and friction, which acts to protect the area but can become painful.

Diagnosis: Typically diagnosed upon examination by a professional chiropodist.

Treatment: Removal during routine visits and identifying biomechanical issues to treat with footwear, padding, or custom orthotics.

Without Treatment: Larger or cracked calluses can cause significant pain and lead to serious wounds, especially in patients with diabetes.

Cracked Heels

Care for fissures that form when the heel becomes excessively dry and callused, common in low-humidity months or with open footwear.

Diagnosis: Diagnosis is made upon physical examination to assess the depth and severity of the fissures.

Treatment: Removal of dry area down to healthier skin, prescription of high-strength moisturizers, and professional footwear advice.

Without Treatment: Fissures can become progressively worse, leading to pain and bleeding. Early treatment is vital to minimize infection risk.
